The weather conditions directly influenced the length and success of crop growth seasons – a growth system known as extensive seasonal agriculture. The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) estimated that by 2050 the world’s population will reach 9.1 billion (34% higher than today) and that income levels will be “many multiples” of what they are now and that food production (net of food used for biodiesel) must increase by 70% to meet those needs (FAO, 2009).
